The Stables History

The History

The Arrowtown settlement was formed around 1861 as part of the gold rush in the area. In 1869 two areas, one of 100 acres and one of 50 acres were surveyed off for Thomas McDonnell – the latter being the land where the homestead and stables for Merryfield Farm were erected. The house was built in 1876 and the stables in 1885.

Jim and Win Monk purchased the farm in 1964 which included the first 50 acres originally bought by McDonnell and is now owned by their son Roger and his family. Over the years the farm has gone from growing grain to mixed cropping and livestock farming including sheep, cattle and deer.

Under Roger’s ownership the property was run in conjunction with Mt Soho station which is part of the Arrow River headwaters. The stables have gone from housing horse’s downstairs and grains and seeds upstairs to use as a woolshed in later years. In 2023 The Stables were converted into a modern venue for guests to enjoy the rustic charm and history set in the beautiful Wakatipu basin.
